Citadelle of Bitche

We discover the monumental silhouette in the hills of the northern Vosges. On a dizzying rock that dominates its city, proudly sits the Citadel of Bitche with its mighty walls, flanked by bastions. The story begins with that of the visionaries who bet on the strategic interest of fortifying the old medieval castle of the Dukes of Lorraine. Between 1680 and 1754, the famous Marquis de Vauban and the architect Cormontaigne worked successively on the construction of the Citadel of Bitche on behalf of the French kings. All the characteristics of the military architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries are recognizable. The citadel remains a unique work and a feat of ingenuity. In the tangle of its fortifications, the informed eye recognizes the famous star pattern that is characteristic of the fire level. In the labyrinth of the underground passages, visitors immerse themselves in the heart of the events of the historical siege of 1870-1871 thanks to a life-size cinematographic reproduction. The restored chapel shows the original relief map of Bitche. Interactive and fun terminals allow you to discover the architectural details. The museum "Men in the War of 1870" offers a realistic overview of this conflict using archive images and stories of soldiers. 13 cultural heritage monuments and the panoramic route allow you to explore the upper plateau.
