Pirna Castle was first mentioned in a document more than 750 years ago. The Sonnenstein Castle rises high above the city as a landmark, which was expanded into a state fortress in 1573. Every year from May to September an art exhibition takes place here with the sculpture summer, which is probably unique of its kind. The interplay of colossal defense architecture and filigree figurative art offers a delightful symbiosis of the seemingly contradicting contrasts.
