Torgau - Fortified City and Fortified Castle
The fortress town of Torgau got its present appearance in the Renaissance of the 16th and early 17th century. The unique, architectural picture of the preserved Torgau Old Town shows pictorially the development of the Torgau during its renaissance flowering period. Torgau was a Saxon country fortress and later as Saxon-Napolean fortress an important and contested military location on the Elbe. At the beginning of the 19th century, Hartenfels Castle became part of the Saxon-Napoleonic fortress and later Prussian barracks. Today it is a monument of international standing and place for significant exhibitions, history and culture.
