A jewel of Franconian fortress architecture is the mighty fortress Rosenberg in Kronach. It is one of the largest, fully preserved, medieval fortifications in Europe and rises steeply above the enchanting Kronach Old Town. The Bamberg prince-bishops developed the once medieval castle into one of their fortresses and splendid residence. Finally, the expansion to the modern fortress complex, which has been preserved until today.
